High School Boy's Basketball Game of the Week

Tuesday, Nov. 24  

(POSTPONED DUE TO COVID) Vanguard (Ocala) at Gainesville, 7:30 p.m. - Despite the fact that these two teams are 45 minutes from each other this game has become a rivalry between the Knights and the 'Canes; 2nd-team All-Area Alex McCray (Averaged 9.0 ppg., 3.0 rpg., 3.0 apg.) is back for the 13-13 Hurricanes.  GHS is 7-3 against the Knights in the past 10 games, including last year's 68-58 win. 

  

Tuesday, Dec. 1  

Santa Fe (Alachua) at Buchholz, 7:30 p.m. - Buchholz's 46-44 win in February snapped a 3-game losing streak to the Raiders.  Buchholz is 6-5 vs. Santa Fe since 2005.  The Bobcats struggled last year with a young team but should be much improved. 

  

Thursday, Dec. 10   

Santa Fe (Alachua) at Eastside, 7:30 p.m. - Santa Fe is led by NC State commit Earnest Ross, the No. 9 overall senior in Florida; Eastside's Jarvil Gainey was the Gainesville Sun's Co-Player of the Year after averaging 17.2 points per game, along with 8.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists; both teams made the state playoffs last year; Rams, who made a run all the way to the 5A Region Final, won 3/4 against the Raiders in 2019-20, including a win in the 4A-District 5 championship game. 

  

Friday, Jan. 8   

Gainesville at Buchholz, 7:30 p.m. - City rivalry; GHS has dominated this series (won 10 in a row), but this is always a physical and defensive game.  In the last meeting, the Bobcats led at the half but lost 63-50 on Jan. 31. 

 

Tuesday, Jan. 12  

Bell at Trenton, 8 p.m. - The visiting 'Dogs had been dominating this series, winning 11 in a row since 2015.  However, last year the state playoff Tigers swept both meetings.  Both games were decided by nine points or less. 

  

Tuesday, Jan. 19   

Santa Fe (Alachua) at Forest (Ocala), 7:30 p.m.  - Santa Fe led by NC State commit Earnest Ross, the No. 9 overall senior in Florida; Wildcats, who could be the top team in Marion County this year, are led by 2022 forward Brenen Lorient.  He already has offers from D-I schools Florida Gulf Coast, FAU, and Stetson. 

   

Friday, Jan. 29   

Eastside at Hawthorne, 7:30 p.m. - This will be standing room only at the Hornets' nest; last year Eastside defeated Hawthorne to snap a 7-game losing streak in the series; Six of the last seven games have been decided by five points or less; both teams made the state playoffs and Hawthorne won the Class 1A state title - their first since 1987. 

  

Friday, Feb. 5   

Eastside at Gainesville, 7:30 p.m. City showdown; this game is normally played at Santa Fe College because of the size of the crowd but due to Covid this game may be played on campus sites; Eastside has won five in a row in the series but GHS is 11-9 in the last 20 meetings.
